Six month old Plott question? Empty Six month old Plott question?

Post  FullCry Thu May 14, 2009 5:37 am

I have a six month old Plott male. When he was four months old I started taking him for walks on this property I have permission to hunt late in the evening just to get him use to water and getting out. I don't have any old dogs to run him with. He readily took to water and I walk straight in the creek and stop on a sand bar or something and let him hunt around so he want just follow me. He will explore and hunt around some and when he tires of this I walk maybe fifty yds up stream and sit again and let him mill around and be a pup. I have done this maybe once or twice a week for this reason and to get him use to riding. I haven't shown him game yet or used scent to get him started. I have seen rabbits but he's not interested in them by scent yet. He does tree squirrels in the yard some. Is what i'm doing ok or is there any draw backs to this? I haven't coon hunted in twenty five years and had beagles and foxhounds and of course more than one to start and of course they will hunt out better in pairs or more. I had originally planned to run him with my coyote hounds....running Walkers and if I do this should I wait till he is a few months older for I have heard that coon hound breeds mature slower than fox hounds which will run at six months usually. Any help appreciated. This dog is coondog stock on both sides and big game stock on both sides ---one each on sire and dam. Thanks, FullCry

Six month old Plott question? Empty No reply?

I guess I shouldn't have even asked this question because I coonhunted with Treeing Walkers and Plotts for ten years then rabbit hunted with a pack of beagles that I raised all from six weeks of age or bred and raised them here and trained them without an old dog and couldn't kill a rabbit for two years due to deer problems etc and no old dog with three that I started with then I ended up with a pack of eight that I could hunt anywhere without any of them running trash and they would run a swamp rabbit just as good as a coon dog swims in a beaver lake running coon and I killed so many rabbits till I got sick of shooting them. I did this for ten years then got into fox/ coyote hunting with Running Walkers that I hunt in the wild not in pens. I have them deer broke and they bay coyote regular but won't kill often. That is why I got this plott bulldog hoping he will grow up and jump on the coyote then the walkers will join in with him like a pack of sand people. They have killed them in the pens though.
I don't mean to sound egotistical but this is just facts about me and I love hounds and like to train and hunt them so I will stick with my tried and true methods and if the Plott don't work out I'll get me a gritty stock of Treeing Walker that can keep up with my foxhounds but I don't care if the Plott is a hundred yds. behind my Fox/coyote dogs---which he probably will be or more---if when they bay he runs in there and catches that stinking son of a gun then they will stretch him out. You coon hunters ought to appreciate the outside coyote hunters because I hear that them stinking coyotes---which we have many of here---kill y'alls young hounds a lot. Well I'm in the business of taking them out and for some reason they have never killed any of my hounds, knock on wood. I'm not into deer hunting with dogs....I despise a deer runner and will track and shock them.

I also had a Treeing Walker gyp back in the early 1980's that would have made nite champion easy but I don't care to competition hunt. She was a real coon dog at age three and got better. Well, she would tree squirrels in the morning and I got tired of being out at night so I started squirrel hunting her. She was even better at that than coon hunting and friends of mine and I killed so many squirrels with her that I kinda got tired of shooting them and I could bark them regular with a .22 and have shot them in midair with that rifle to. This is fact and I retract my original post and all the big name competion hunters can lay down. There are so many hunts now that anybody with half a dog can make a nite champion out of one. Ban me if you want to for I don't care because there are many boards I can go to and get an answer if need be but I now realize that I don't need any advice from a board I can just talk to my hunting buddys. Good luck to you all with your hunting and training and I wish you all the best, FullCry
