Beckley, WV - The long life of one of the nation's oldest and best loved Plott breeders came to a peaceful end this afternoon with his beloved family at his bedside. Homon Eugene Fielder, 88 of Beckley died today at the Veterans Hospital after an extended illness.

Homon was born on January 29, 1920 in Dickson, Tennessee, the son of Stephen Ford Fielder and Emma Haley Fielder. Homon's father was a retired railroader and his mother was a teacher in a one-room school in Hickman County, Tennessee before raising their family of nine children on a 80-acre farm in rural Dickson County.

Homon is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Phillip and Julian, and by four sisters, Carolyn, Mavis, Jean, and Frances. He is survived by two sisters, Ann Greene of Dickson, Tenn., and Sara Dexter of Greer, SC. He is also survived by his wife of 62 years, Vera Lorraine Fielder, two sons, Stephen Ford Fielder of Raleigh, NC and David Randall Fielder of Tazewell, VA, two beloved daughters-in-law Carol Ann Fielder of Raleigh, NC and Tammy Fielder of Tazewell, VA, a grandson Christopher Ryan Fielder and his wife Tereza Fielder, Bloomingdale, IL, and two granddaughters Miranda Beth Fielder, a student a Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA and Madison Gray Fielder, at home in Tazewell, VA.

Homon was a WWII combat veteran having served in both the European and Pacific Theatres. He served with the 1874th Aviation Engineer Battalon in the Pacific whose motto "Australia To Japan" foretold the unit's plan to participate in the invasion of Japan, a plan that was interupted by the dropping of the atom bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that ended the war.

Homon was a journeyman pipefitter for 30 years and a member of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters.

Homon's lifelong love was hunting and breeding Plott dogs for bear hunting. He was a past president of the West Virginia Bear Hunter's Association and was a member of the West Virginia Bear Hunter's Hall of Fame. He was a lifetime member of the National Plott Hound Association. He lobbied the US Forest Service on behalf of hound hunters by fighting to end clear cutting of the National Forests, something in which he believed very strongly. His Bear Pen line of Plott dogs is widely known for their speed, grit, and desire to catch black bears. Four of his hounds, CH Bear Pen Fancy, CH NiteCH Bear Pen Plotts Bronco, CH Bronco's Fancy Julie, and Bear Pen Song of the South have been inducted into the National Plott Hound Association Hall of Fame.

Homon left many friends in our sport. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Folks, the family is very touched by your kind words and especially appreciates your prayers.

We will have a visitation at Blue Ridge Funeral Home on Robert C. Byrd Drive in Beckley from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday.

Dad's funeral will be held at 11 AM on Thursday at Calvary Assembly of God Church on Sunset Drive in Beckley, WV.

Dad loved to talk as you well know. I knew the end was near when he was content to just lie in his bed and listen instead of telling one of his stories. The following words, which appeared on a Father's Day card that Carol and I gave him will appear in the brochure for his service:

IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK

If these walls could talk,
They would speak of a man
Who has worked with great heart
To accomplish his plan.
They’d speak of the times
That he’s prayed in the night
For the strength to go on
And to do what is right.

They’d speak of sweet moments
Of laughter and fun,
The times with his children,
His love for each one.
Oh, if they could talk,
It would just be the start
Of a story of love,
A great man, and his heart.

I'll get a phone number and address as soon as I can so anyone can call or send a card.
