Folks......I have 2 Pocahontas Plott pups that are being trained on coon at the moment, but will be swapped over to bear this fall when they will be a year old. At that point, I need to acquire a couple more Plotts to run them with. My question is, would it be better to buy a finished and a started dog, 2 started dogs, or 2 finished dogs to train with? Also, my 19 wek old Pocahontas male is running and opening up on game, squirrels and deer mostly, but I just started him on coon skin drags yesterday, and he is putting his feet on the tree already. Should I keep him straight on bear, or use him as a multi purpose dog for bear and boar? My thinking was to keep 1 straight bear dog, and use the others as bear and boar hounds. By using a straight rig/strike dog, he/she could start the track and I could add in the combo dogs, and for boar, I would just use the 3 combo dogs. There are no bears where I hunt boar, so that should work, I think.....

Had a major setback tonight, that I may not ever recover from. I lost my male tonight while taking our daily run. My sons friend brought along a female lab, and my male was getting very rough with her. I tried to separate them with my foot and hit my male with my foot in the chest. He stumbled back and collapsed on the trail. I tried mouth to mouth and chest compressions to revive him. No luck. I informed Gene of the incident, and he feels a broken rib punctured his lungs or maybe his heart. Anyway, I am devastated. I am going to continue with my bear hound efforts, and I knew I would lose dogs in his great tradition, but i cant believe Clyde is gone. God bless you Clyde, I love you and will miss you!!! May there be plenty of bear for you, and those who have gone before you, to run in hound heaven..........
