Pocahontas Pups - Training

Post  Bullsprig1100 on Wed Jan 07, 2009 7:12 am

I had my 18 and 15 week old Pocahontas pups out on their nightly run through the hills when I noticed the 18 week old male, Clyde, had gone over the hill and had not come back for a minute or two. Shortly I heard him open up on something and he was moving at a steady pace, bawling all the way. I caught up to him visually after about 200 yds, and didn't see what he was running. He continued to open and get hotter (faster bawls) on the track. He followed whatever it was for about 300 or 400 yars total when he lost interest. Is this a good thing or should I be worried since I have no idea what he was after? I thought it was very cool and I was proud of him, but want to make sure this is good for a 18 week old. My 15 week old female went to him, but neve ropened up.....

Sounds good to me what ever he was running....Thats part of growing and learning how to hunt....Next it will be baying or treeing and if you show them enough game on what ever you plan to hunt him with than he will be fine....Congrads on an early starter....Perkey

Perkey Found out yesterday that it was a deer, most likely, because I saw the buck the next evening on our run. I have an E-collar and have used it successfully on my bird dogs in the past. I know not to get frustrated and get too zap happy. Any suggestions would be appreciated on where to go from here......I also updated my signature.....Thanks

Even though that ain't what you want him to chase I wouldn't get to disappointed or like you said shock happy....Thats part of growing and learning to hunt...I would make sure not too expose him to areas that have high numbers of deer...Sounds like you need to trap a coon or work with him on drags of the game of choice....I bet he'll take right off and make you proud...Perkey

I spoke to Gene Walker and he assured me that Clyde running a deer isn't the end of the world. Gene strongly advised against shock therapy at Clyde's age. I am going to start running him at night, instead of day so we can find a coon or two. I am going to trap one to get them started on here in the next couple of days. Thanks for the advice....I need all I can get.....

That little gyp looks almost identical to the pup Kacey got from you early last year...She's really turned it on this past season as well as the pup Freddie got from you...Perkey

Gene ~ Done anything with my reject yet? You should send her up to Harpster to coon hunt. Although you may not get her back.
