This kind of stuff doesn't bother any of you, right? It'll never happen to us, right?
Yeah, right. I certainly hope it doesn't!

PLEASE CALL THE CA ASSEMBLY APPROPS COMMITTEE TO OPPOSE SB 250 Empty Re: PLEASE CALL THE CA ASSEMBLY APPROPS COMMITTEE TO OPPOSE SB 250

First off, I'd like to thank NPHA President Gary Cox for personally calling the 16 Aseembly Members and voicing his opposition personally as well as that of the NPHA to this bill!!

Right up until Tuesday evening I had made plans to be in Sacramento and show Opposition support to this bill. Unfortunately I wasn't able to go this time.
Below is a letter from Bill Gaines from COHA who was there and ready to speak in opposition if the bill was indeed presented. I'll be sure to keep you abreast of any future issues concerning our dogs!

Below is a letter sent to me by Bill Gaines, President of COHA.

Thank you.

Dear John and Irv:

I am pleased to let you know that SB 250 was brought up for consideration in the Assembly Appropriations Committee on July 15th. I was at the hearing representing COHA, CHC, USSA and other interested COHA members. With a room full of organizations and individuals in opposition to the measure closely watching, the bill's author - Senator Dean Florez - chose not to present the bill or to bring forth any speakers in support of the measure. Opposition did have a limited opportunity to testify and were joined by two Assembly Members on the Committee who echoed their opposition to the bill. As expected, the Committee placed the bill on the “suspense” due to the measure's fiscal impact on the state. The bill could be pulled from suspense and heard in Committee in the near future. However, if the bill is not pulled from the suspense file, it will die a quiet death. Given the state’s fiscal situation, other higher priorities, and the outpouring of opposition to the measure, we are hopeful that the bill will stay on suspense. COHA will continue to keep a close watch on this bill.

Below is the link to the news release the USSA sent out earlier today on the bill:

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to seeing both of you at our annual event on August 1st.

An outpouring of opposition by California sportsmen has applied the brakes to a bill that would trample the rights of sportsmen and dog enthusiasts.

Senate Bill 250, which would with few exceptions mandate that all dogs be spayed or neutered, appeared on the fast track this year. It passed the Senate last month and recently cleared the Assembly Business and Professions Committee. However, during a hearing on July 15, more than 100 opponents turned out and rallied afterwards. During the rally, they heard from numerous speakers including longtime sportsmen’s supporter, Sen. George Runner (R- Lancaster) a member of the Outdoor Sporting Caucus.

The bill remains “suspense file” which is where bills with a fiscal impact go. Once a bill has been placed there, legislators must vote to remove it before the bill can be considered again.

“The turnout today as well as the calls, letters, and emails from sportsmen and dog enthusiasts made a difference,” said Rob Sexton, U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance (USSA) vice president for government affairs. “Although we’re not out of the woods yet, this kind of grassroots support is what can really get the attention of legislators. “

In addition to USSA, opposition has come from dog and sporting groups across California, including key partners such as the California Outdoor Heritage Alliance (COHA), Masters of Foxhounds Association of North America, NRA, California Rifle and Pistol Association, and Pet Pac.

Take Action- California sportsmen should continue contacting their Assembly members and inform them of your continued opposition to SB 250 without full protections for sporting dog owners.

To find your state assembly member’s phone number, please use the Legislative Action Center. You can also send an e-mail directly to your legislator through the legislative action center.
